Tragedy stuck Sonia and her children when her husband Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu during an election campaign on May 21, 1991. Rajiv was killed by Tamil militants from Si Lanka, who were upset with him over his policies towards the island state when he was Prime Minister. |
