Sonia reluctantly entered the political world in 1998. In the immediate aftermath of Rajiv's assassination, the Congress Working Committee met on May 22 and elected Sonia as president of the party. Sonia, however, declined the post and PV Narasimha Rao, a political leader hailing from the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh became the president of the party. Sonia subsequently became leader of the Congress party in 1998. She contested from Amethi, her late husband's consituency, in 1999 and become the Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament. Sonia contested from Rai Bareilly constituency in the 2005 Parliamentary elections and once again won handsomely. |
